1) on two seperate occasions this week, I was called perfect and flawless and
2)Michael Jackson
You might be wondering what those 2 things have to do with each other. Well, I've never considered myself perfect or flawless. One imperfection about myself is I have vitiligo. The same disease MJ had that cause his skin to change colors. Fortunately, I only have the "focal pattern" which depigmentation is limited to one or only a few areas. I have white patches on my hands. Around the age of 21 is when I started to noticing the white patches.
The other day, a friend and I had a disagreement because he claimed MJ hated his blackness. That made me go hmmmm. Maybe it was my love for MJ but I believed him when he stated he had vitiligo. Ironically on this same day of the disagreement, I saw a clip of MJ saying "I know I'm a black man". Click here
Vitiligo can really make a person have emotional, psychological, and self-esteem issues. I never had any major issues but for a long time I was embarrassed of my hands. I still hate for people to ask "what's wrong with your hands?" Plus I think it's rude! It's not hard for me to believe MJ went through a process of depigmentation because he had the money. Here he is a big superstar then all of a sudden he sees white patches all over his body. Depigmentation involves fading the rest of the skin on the body to match the areas that are already white. The thought of me having the pattern that spreads all over my body is terrifying. I would go through depigmentation. I sure would. No ifs and or buts about it! So I can't and won't judge Michael b/c of his skin color. I understand. Once you go through dipigmentation, you are very sensitive to sunlight. That would explain why MJ walked around alot with his face covered and in alot of clothes even in warm weather.
I'm always checking my son's body for any patches because vitiligo is hereditary. I pray alot that I never find any. I was told by my dermalogist......... that it can skip many generations then show up all of a sudden. I learned my great aunt has little spots on her feet and her neice (my older cousin) has it on her inner thighs. Because of their limited area of vitiligo more than likely it won't spread all over my body.
I have seen many people with it and I try NOT to stare. I only have it on my hands and get embarrased so I can't imagine how people feel that have it on their face and among other parts of their body. It's a terrible thing and sadly there's no cure and doctors don't know what actually causes it.
Here's part of an article I found:
In1993, Dr. Arnold Klien was called to give evidence in a grand jury proceeding to verify that Does Jackson has vitiligo or not? He stated, under oath, that;“ Michael was diagnosed with lupus and vitiligo in 1986 and that he prescribed Michael a de-pigmentation cream in 1990s”. He also said that, “People often say to me “Michael’s skin was fine back in the 80’s and they didn’t see any skin problems”, But I don’t know how people didn’t notice There is plenty of photo proof that clearly shows that Michael had something going on with his skin back in the 80’s. Michael often disguised it with layers of makeup on his face and hands”. Prescription of medication to Jackson for vitiligo: Jackson was prescribed to use the medication having monobenzylether of hydroquinone, which is always used in Depigmentation process, because it is a very strong medication, and it makes Depigmentation treatment permanent.
This wasn't suppose to be a defend MJ's skin color post but I just had to add the article.
On a lighter note, here's the slideshow of the wedding pics. (Hint about my crush: he's a groomsmen, there are a few pics of just him, there's a pic of us).
